A Runner’s Life

SOS Children’s Villages

SOS Children’s Villages is a non-government organization committed to providing family based care to orphaned, abandoned and neglected children.  Founded in 1949 by Dr. Hermann Gmeiner, an Austrian, whose vision is that children need the love of a family so that they can reach their fullest potential.  SOS Children’s Villages is a home to over 65,000 children and youths in over 1,766 facilities in 132 countries.

SOS Philippines began in 1967 when it opened its first Village in Lipa City.  Other facilities are located in Calbayog, Cebu, Davao, Iloilo, Manila and Tacloban.  The 8th Village in Bataan is currently under construction and will be innaugurated in June 2009.

The SOS family approach is based on four principles:  1. The Mother is a single child-care professional who lives togetehr with the children, guides their development and runs her household independently;  2. Brothers and Sisters – children of different ages live together as brothers and sisters, with natural brothers and sisters always staying within the same SOS family where the SOS Mother build emotional ties that last a lifetime; 3. The House is the family’s home with its own unique feeling, rhythm and routine.  Under its roof, children enjoy a real sense of security and belonging.  The children grow and learn togetehr, sharing responsibilities and all the joys and sorrows of daily life; and 4.  The Village – SOS families live together, forming a supportive village environment where children enjoy a happy childhood.  They also live as integrated and contributing members of the local community.  Through his family, village and community, each child learns to participate actively in society.

SOS kids stay in a house and raised in family environment under the care of an SOS Mother.  They grow up just like ordinary children in a typical household.  They have their assigned household chores study in nearby schools.  There are also various activities to cultivate their talents such as summer camps, Christmas Cantats, sports fests and community rosary among others.

Just as these children need the love of a mother and a family to survive they need friends like you to see them through. It does not take much to help.  For as little as P100 a month, you can help change their lives forever.

May I invite you to login to our website at or personally visit an SOS Children’s Village near you to personally experience the SOS Family.
